Bon Appetit’s Food Lover’s Cleanse Day 3

Welcome back to my journey through Bon Appetit’s Food Lover’s Cleanse. As I did not cook dinner last night, we’ll start right off with breakfast this morning.


This is a Banana-Almond Smoothie. It was as good as it looks, full of banana and almond flavor thanks to the almond milk, almond butter (a new ingredient for me), and almond extract that were in it. Oh, there was a banana, too. I think I like almond butter more than peanut butter. I can’t believe I waited this long to taste it. It’s great with a sliced apple, too, as a snack, I found out last night.

This breakfast wasn’t quite as long-lasting as the others have been, so I was glad when lunch came around.


Normally, the Cleanse menu suggests making a salad with some leftover protein from dinner the night before. Since that was not an option today, I went for Plan B, salad greens, barley, smoked salmon, and Sherry Vinaigrette. I cooked a big batch of barley this morning as suggested by the plan, and added some of it to my lunch salad. This was a very satisfying, if not terribly adventurous, meal. But alas, it too left me quite ready for a snack this afternoon.


My snack today was a sliced pear with chèvre. This is one of those remarkable food combinations, where each food’s flavors are enhanced and complimented by the others. The pear’s sweetness was lifted by the saltiness of the chèvre, and the slight tartness of the chèvre was punched up by the pear. I could live on this.

That’s the secret of this menu, I think. At first glance, you might find yourself thinking, oh no, not another “diet plan” based on deprivation and fear, due to the lack of sugar, dairy products from cows, and refined carbohydrates. But the the flavor combinations bring all tastes together; sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami are all here, dancing on your tongue at the same time, making each bite truly as satisfying emotionally as it is physically. Not only is this menu nourishing, it’s flavorful turned up to eleven. There’s just enough fat, from vegetable and meat sources, to carry all those flavors, without making you feel bloated and tired after each meal.
