L to R: Lettuce, Red Bell Peppers, Butternut Squash, Eggplant, Kale, Carrots, Potatoes, Chile Peppers, Salad Mix, Arugula.
Well, this is the next to last share from our CSA for the year. It feels like it went by so fast. Next week, along with a share to pick up in the farmstand, the fields will be open for gleaning, which just means going out and picking whatever we are interested in that’s left. This usually means there is some of everything, but not enough to bring into the barn so everyone can have a weekly share, or that the produce is really large, or not the prettiest specimens. I have not participated in the gleaning in past years, for one reason or another (scheduling wrong, weather bad, still piled high with veg, etc.) but I may wander out there this year just to see what’s there.
Also, this weekend, fall officially arrives, but it’s already fall-like around here, with leaves on the ground, shorter days, and cooler nights. There’s a lot of lettuce and greens in the house, but it’s hard for me to consider serving and eating green salads when what I really want is some hearty vegetable soups. But the lettuce must be obeyed. I’ll have to get creative.
That’s all I have right now. It’s time to take Luna for a walk in the crisp fall morning air. I’ll see you on down the Road.
