Have a Happy Real Food Thanksgiving!

I was thinking about the upcoming food-fest that is Thanksgiving, and marveling at the fact that on that one day a year, many people who otherwise don’t, cook all real foods, all from scratch. From the turkey and stuffing, down to the candied yams (ok, make exception for marshmallows, have you read the label??)  ;), green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade pies, freshly whipped cream…

I was wondering why this is the case. Why isn’t it as important, why don’t we take the time, why don’t we shop as carefully for the ingredients for our everyday meals as we do for Thanksgiving dinner? It would obviously be on a much smaller scale, since we don’t cook gigantic feasts every week of the year, so what is stopping us? To the opposite end, why don’t we just all get take-out on Thanksgiving, it would be so much easier, someone else doing all the cooking and cleaning, and taking the blame if the turkey is dry, the gravy is lumpy or the crust is soggy?

Just something I was thinking about…

After Thanksgiving (for various reasons) ;) , I am going to start reading the book, “The End of Overeating”, by David Kessler, MD. I will be reporting back here with what he has to say about the “insatiable American appetite”. There has been a lot of buzz about this book on food blogs lately, so I am looking forward to finding out what the excitement is about, and sharing it here.
